Last week I finally took a break from work and spent a couple of fantastic days in Charlottesville, Virginia. Charlottesville known for the University of Virginia, Thomas Jefferson, rolling country lanes, horse farms and wonderful shops and boutiques. O.K., perhaps it’s best known to me for it’s shops and boutiques.
If you visit Charlottesville you’ll want to check out the historic downtown mall filled with shops and al fresco dining. But don’t limit your shopping to just downtown. Take a slow, meandering drive along Ivy Road and check out all of the shops along the way.
First stop for antiques, accessories, apothecary, customer furniture and design services is And George.
Next stop? Just up and over the hill to Ivy Nursery, voted best nursery in Charlottesville in 2010.
Of course the plants and greenhouses are fantastic but my favorite is the inspiring interior.
Looking for something handcrafted by local artists? Don’t miss the sweet The Barn Swallow Gallery which is almost hidden by a beautiful cottage-inspired garden.
Is all of this shopping making you hungry? Drive just a bit further down Ivy Road to the Greenwood Gourmet Grocery where you can get a deli lunch, a bottle of wine, local honey or a garden pot in almost any size imaginable.
Is there a shopping road or route in Charlottesville that you love?

I love viewing the store “And George” definitely right up my alley on my taste. I’ll need to drag my husband (George) to go check it out. Thank you in advance for putting a hole in my wallet!
It’s only 90 minutes to Cville from DC Tracy — not far to drag your George!
I’m planning a trip to Charlotteville this summer AND I need a few pieces of furniture! As usual, Spoon and Chair has all the answers. Can’t wait to visit.
